Air power that makes waste management more successful – and more economical
You might wonder what role an air compressor could possibly play at a landfill site. We certainly did. But it turns out that compressed air is an extremely important part of the waste management process, where it powers the lift pumps that draw out rainfall and moisture.
Why does that matter, you might ask? Because, as you’re probably aware, landfill sites are subject to extremely tight controls, and when too much moisture enters the waste mass it’s much harder to meet regulations.
Waterlogged landfill sites increase the risk of contaminated water escapes. They increase odours and emissions. They affect structural integrity and block gas extraction pipes, increasing the risk of harmful gases building up.
In short, a landfill site’s air compressor really matters.
A more economical compressed air system
Valencia Waste Recycling knows that all too well, and as its Bury site had expanded so it needed to increase its air power capability. That’s why we were asked to supply an additional compressor for the site.
To meet the new level of demand in the most economical way, we installed a Hertz 30kWh variable speed air compressor and pipework (the blue and grey cabinets in these images) to accompany the existing SOLIDair compressor (in green). The variable speed matters because it helps to reduce motor wear (increasing longevity) and operating costs (literature varies but 30% is the most often-quoted saving).
It’s in operation now, helping Valencia control costs while meeting its environmental requirements.
