What an overdue service looks like
Think your compressor will be fine for another few months before you book a service? Here’s why that might not be the best idea.
We get it. When we say, “Given the operating hours, you’ll need this air compressor servicing in 6/9/12 months,” the shrewd among you will think, ‘they’re probably erring on the side of caution – it’ll stand another few months before I book a service’.
Except, often it won’t. We set servicing intervals according to operating hours and the working environment, and although it’s ultimately a business’ choice as to when it has its servicing done, there’s a reason we set the timescales as we do.
Here’s a perfect example of the ‘why’.
This is an ABAC air compressor, and that amber-coloured ring is what’s left of the air filter. The cause of it looking like this is likely a suction box failure (although it could have been an air/oil separator failure) but the outcome is all too familiar: breakdown, downtime and lots of hassle, lost productivity and frustrated customer calls for this Yorkshire-based machining business.
Replacing the filter, fixing all the seals and cleaning up all that oil and rust was a hefty job – one that would have been much less involved, much quicker and much cheaper if the compressor had been serviced earlier.
So if it’s a while since you had your compressor serviced, book it now at a time that’s convenient for you. Because when it chooses to breakdown, you can guarantee the timing won’t be convenient at all.
