The HSE has announced a review of two compressed-air related regulations and is asking for evidence to support the review. We’ll be sending our thoughts, and we’d like to include yours.

The Pressure Systems Safety Regulations (PSSR) and the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER) have been around for more than 25 years. Like all the HSE’s regulations they were designed to reduce risk, but as time passes, things change. Now, the HSE is reviewing both regulations to ensure they still meet the needs of British business.

To do that, they’ve made a “request for evidence” from manufacturers, importers, suppliers, users and anyone else who may have a contribution to make.

In particular, they want to:

  • Understand whether any aspects of the regulations impose administrative or financial burdens that do not clearly support risk reduction
  • Identify areas where the regulations may no longer reflect current practice or technological developments
  • Explore whether there is scope to improve clarity or effectiveness

We have thoughts on each of the above and we’re planning to make our own submission to the HSE. But before we do, we wanted to get your thoughts too.

If you’ve got something to say – about safe operating limits, written schemes of operation, maintenance, record keeping or anything else included in the regs – we’d love you to tell us.

To have your say, please contact us and complete the online form…

  • For ‘nature of enquiry’ please select ‘other’.
  • Then send us your thoughts in the ‘your message’ section.

We’ll make sure we include your ideas and opinions in our response to the HSE.

Time is tight, so to make sure we can include your comments in our submission, please send them by end of 31 October 2025. Thanks.
