How a regular servicing appointment avoided a serious fault.
Service contracts can be figurative (and occasionally literal) lifesavers, but still there’s no getting away from the fact that when you’re deluged by work, they’re all too easy to put off to another time.
But a recent servicing appointment for a South Yorkshire prison highlighted just how vital a service contract can be. It was during routine maintenance of the machinery used to produce furniture like desk and cupboards in the prison workshop that our engineer found an electrical fault on the compressor.
He investigated and traced the problem back to a faulty starter button. Left undetected, the button would have failed and (because these things always fail at the most inconvenient time) the prison would have lost the use of its CNCs, beam saw, sander and edge bander, just when the prison inmates were in the middle of production. That would have resulted in an urgent call out, lost production and a frustrated set of prisoners (not usually the ideal group of people to upset).
Instead, the issue was spotted, solved and fixed. There was no downtime, no loss of production, no inconvenience. And no angry prisoners.
That’s why service contracts make sense.
